How much should we pay our pastor? Question: I am the treasurer of a small, fairly new church. We recently had the pastor leave who planted the church. The church also spilt with many members leaving. Our pastor search committee has found a candidate who they believe is right for our church; however, salary has become a thorny issue among the. And the employee was reimbursed $4, for a conference in California. How much does the employee make? $50, of course. You don’t add benefits and expenses and call it pay. That’s the total package, but not the paycheck. Articulate your pastor’s pay with that same vernacular. Don’t keep the pastor’s pay low to keep him humble.

Definitely Ron. We desperately need a grid including volunteer experience. And we need to communicate that grid effectively to churches. In my experience churches are not aware of any such grid and are completely lost as to what youth pastors/directors should be paid. There should be a pension plan and health benefits put in place. What I meant was this, when we pay a man to do the stuff that we should be doing, we fail to grow. Should we pay a pastor after he retires? Bible Answer: There are two principles to consider. The first principle is that Christians are required to support those who teach the Word of God. That is, the church must financially support its pastor and that support must be enough to provide for his retirement.

How does the church keep the pastor healthy. Do we need a capital campaign. This post originally appeared at LeaderWorks on David Roseberry. When we take church size into account, it makes sense that smaller churches will have to spend a larger portion of their budget to pay a full-time pastor.

Piper quotes 1 Timothy on this principle: “The passage reads, “Don’t put a muzzle on an ox while it treads grain, and workers deserve their pay.” (CEB) Piper understands the verse to mean, don’t make the pastor moonlight or force the pastor’s spouse to work Author: Bob Ditmer.

Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, "You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain." And in another place, "Those who work deserve their pay!" (1 TimothyNLT).

Other dynamics play a role. A church’s size and its income are critical, for obvious reasons. But so is education. The Compensation Handbook for Church Staff suggests pastors with a master’s degree earn 10 to 20 percent more than those with a bachelor’s degree, and a doctorate adds another 15 percent on top of that.
